  1. Looks interesting. From what I've seen in the preview, it's as hard in Tokyo to get into nursery school. I'm not looking forward to it.

I'd love to do a review if you hold any press screenings.

  3. I was just watching this on Showtime.
    I have two words:
    HOW
    RIDICULOUS!!!!!
And to those school directors reviewing the applications....How dare they say "Oh, this one's parent is a bartender, etc." It should not matter who or what you parents are, as long as they can pay your extortional fees!!!

  4. Thoroughly enjoyable. But I have to say....I think we should be able to learn more about the parents. What do they do for a living, for example? I think details like this would give us valuable insight into this craziness and whether this game is so rigged it really does not matter how hard you try if you do not have the right connections. For example, as much as I hate to say it and as much as I admired his parents and he seemed adorable, I was definitely left with the impression that Kieron got in only becasuse his mom was such good friends with Roxanne, the private school consultant, who surely wields lots of power in this arena.

  5. What I'm wondering, Pegggus, is why this is all so important. Why is it "do or die" to get your child into one of these places??
It really seems to be the parents vanity, more than anything. I'd much rather hire someone to come to my home to care for my children, and it would probably be MUCH less expensive.

  6. My question, as an Early Childhood Educator, is are these schools doing what is best for the child or the business? I think it is a shame that children are excluded from the best possible learning experience simply because of economic factors (although we are talking about Manhattan here and not many of the parents seem even remotely close to any poverty line)and they certainly shouldn't be excluded because of the type of work their parents do, because that is not the choice of the child and they shouldn't be held accountable for however their parents decide to pay for what seems to be an exorbitant amount for a preschool education. The goal of many of these places seems to be look how great we are, not look at the great things children can accomplish and how they have grown from being here. It seems a little backwards to me.

  7. How can such bright individuals buy into so much BS? These preschools are laughing all the way to the bank. (and so are the rest of us)

  8. Most of these people made me sick. As a New Yorker who had to work on the Upper East Side, I am way to familiar with the attitudes and mindset of that portion of the population. The reason I will NEVER work in that area again is the ridiculous sense of entitlement and complete detachment from the real world, where regular people work & struggle to achieve. I am middle class from Queens, went to public schools, attending a prestigious PUBLIC high school where my parents didn't write checks, sleep outside for applications or any other insanity. They wanted a good education for their kid as well and I got that as went onto college and now law school. 20 grand for nursery school when people are losing jobs, homes, etc...GIMME A BREAK! The only tolerable people were the uptown couple trying to level the playing field for their son and the Greenwich Village couple. To look at the Barrow Street school and complain about it needing to be fixed up was offensive and that couple that moved to the Boston suburbs...GOOD RIDDANCE! Here's a question, what is it about ONE two year old child that is so much better or superior to another that they get the honor of being admitted huh?
